Honda has set an
ambitious goal to become India's bike market leader in the next 10 years
after cutting off ties with long-term partner Hero. The company is
going to launch a 100cc commuter bike this year. The launch of a
mass-market bike may help the company increase its market share in the
country. The company may set up a separate plant for manufacturing the
bike. The current capacity of 1.2 mn in the existing plant may not be
enough once the company starts manufacturing the 100cc bike for the
Indian market. This new 100cc commuter bike from Honda will share parts
with the 110cc Twister. Expect the bike to hit the showrooms somewhere
in July – August 2011.
As of now Honda sells bikes like CB
Twister, CB Shine, CBF Stunner, CB Unicorn, CB Unicorn Dazzler, Activa,
CBR 1000RR, Activa and Dio in India. The company may launch the 100 cc
bike priced around Rs. 40,000. It is notable that Honda's joint venture
with Hero had helped them to become the market leader in India by
selling mostly affordable, reliant and fuel-efficient bikes for the mass
market segment. Honda now wants to become the market leader competing
against its old joint venture partner.
